Zelensky Reaffirms Ukraine’s Territorial Stance in Talks Linked to Mediation Efforts

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that he made clear to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich that Ukraine will not agree to withdraw from its own territory, according to reports.

In remarks published in an interview, Zelenskyy described a meeting held in Kyiv in which Abramovich reportedly conveyed messages related to possible frameworks for diplomatic negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian president said he responded by affirming both Ukraine’s willingness to engage in talks and its firm position on territorial integrity.

He stated: “I said we are ready but we will not leave our territory by ourselves, by our decisions. So it’s not about compromises,” as cited in the interview.

Zelenskyy also suggested that there are differing views within Russia’s political circle regarding the war, claiming that some individuals favor ending the conflict while others support its continuation.

According to reports citing individuals familiar with the matter, Abramovich’s visit to Kyiv in May was part of an effort to explore possible channels for peace discussions with Moscow. Zelenskyy was also reported to have asked him to relay messages to Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling Ukraine’s readiness for direct talks.

The Ukrainian president has confirmed the meeting in multiple media interviews, describing it as part of broader, ongoing attempts to explore diplomatic engagement.

Abramovich has previously been involved in informal mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine since the early stages of the conflict in 2022, according to reports.
