Sources Say Quick US–Iran Peace Deal “Highly Unlikely”
The assessment came in response to recent comments by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that a deal to resolve the broader Middle East conflict could be reached within “two or three days.” He also described negotiations as being close to a “very, very good, strong, powerful deal.”
However, sources involved in mediation efforts described the situation as complex and highly sensitive, pointing in particular to continued military activity and what they characterized as repeated ceasefire violations in southern Lebanon. They argued that these conditions make an immediate agreement unrealistic.
According to the same sources, efforts to bring the parties back to the negotiating table remain ongoing, with an emphasis on halting hostilities as a prerequisite for progress. They added that if military operations in southern Lebanon were halted and direct talks between the United States and Iran resumed, there would be a stronger chance of reaching a broader agreement in the near term.
The sources also suggested that most key issues had already been discussed in prior negotiations, but said that recent escalations disrupted what had been close to a preliminary understanding.
Despite this, they emphasized that a resolution could not realistically be finalized within a two-to-three-day timeframe, as suggested in recent public statements.
