Florentino Perez Re-Elected Real Madrid President in Landslide Victory

(MENAFN) Florentino Perez has secured another four-year term at the helm of Real Madrid, defeating challenger Enrique Riquelme in a presidential election held Sunday — the first contested vote the incumbent has faced since returning to the club in 2009.

The result was not declared until the early hours of Monday after more than 1,000 ballots were challenged over alleged irregularities in the postal voting process. When the dust settled, Perez, 79, had claimed a commanding victory with 21,741 votes — 65 percent — against Riquelme's 11,814 votes, representing 35 percent of the total.

Perez called the election on May 12 at a press conference, timing the announcement just ahead of the conclusion of Real Madrid's second consecutive season without a major trophy.

Riquelme, a businessman from Alicante, entered the race as a relative unknown among the club's membership base and had limited time to assemble a coherent platform. The challenger nonetheless made bold promises on the campaign trail, pledging to bring former Real Madrid legends Raul Gonzalez, Fernando Hierro, and Iker Casillas back to the club in official capacities. He also vowed to sign Manchester City stars Rodri and Erling Haaland — though Haaland's representative moved swiftly to deny any such agreement was in place. Riquelme further named former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as his preferred head coach, a claim equally undermined when Klopp's agent confirmed the German had no interest in returning to the dugout.

Perez, meanwhile, ran on a platform of marquee ambitions. The re-elected president announced that Jose Mourinho would return to the Real Madrid dugout after a 13-year absence — a confirmation widely expected in the coming days. He also pledged to sign Ibrahima Konate, who departs Liverpool as a free agent, alongside Inter Milan fullback Denzel Dumfries.
