UN Chief Demands End to Iran Ceasefire Breaches, Reopen Hormuz Strait

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged an immediate halt to alleged ceasefire violations linked to the Iran conflict and called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued instability could further damage the global economy, according to reports.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo, Guterres stressed the need to restore freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway and to create conditions that would allow for a political resolution to the wider conflict.

“It is essential to immediately reestablish the freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz, and to end all ceasefire violations and create conditions for a political solution to the conflict,” he said.

He warned that ongoing tensions in the Middle East are contributing to rising inflation and intensifying the global cost-of-living crisis by pushing up prices for energy, raw materials, and fertilizers.

According to reports, Guterres said that widening geopolitical divisions and lack of trust are undermining international efforts to resolve conflicts, adding that some states are increasingly disregarding international law.

“Our world today is rocked by conflicts, climate chaos and inequality,” he said.

“Military spending is outpacing spending on aid, while funding cuts have devastating consequences for the world’s most vulnerable people,” he added.

Reports noted that tensions in the region have remained elevated since strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran earlier in the year, which disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.

Although a ceasefire agreement brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect in April, continued violations and stalled diplomatic talks have raised concerns over a possible renewed escalation.
