Spain Airlifts First Hantavirus Evacuees from Cruise Ship MV Hondius

(MENAFN) The first evacuation flight carrying Spanish nationals rescued from the Hantavirus-affected cruise ship MV Hondius lifted off from the Canary Islands bound for Madrid on Sunday, as authorities moved swiftly to contain the outbreak.

Evacuees were transported directly from the Port of Granadilla to Tenerife South Airport aboard buses deployed by Spain's Military Emergencies Unit, with the convoy moving under the escort of the Spanish Civil Guard.

The initial group comprised 14 Spanish nationals — 13 passengers and a single crew member — making them the first individuals to disembark from the stricken vessel. Upon arrival, the evacuees are set to be received at the Torrejon de Ardoz air base on the outskirts of Madrid, before being transferred to the Gomez Ulla Central Defense Hospital to complete mandatory isolation protocols, Spanish authorities confirmed.

Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia stated that the operation was proceeding under "all necessary safety measures." She further confirmed that all passengers who remain aboard the cruise ship are currently showing no symptoms.

Repatriation efforts are set to continue into Monday, with a final flight scheduled to transport Australian citizens home. The Netherlands is also expected to dispatch what Spanish media characterized as a "sweep flight" on Monday afternoon — designed to collect any passengers who have yet to be repatriated by their home countries.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the total number of confirmed Hantavirus cases aboard the MV Hondius, though the multi-nation evacuation response underscores the seriousness with which governments are treating the outbreak.
