Lufthansa Cuts 20,000 Flights as Iran War Drives Fuel Costs Up
Despite the sweeping cuts, the German flag carrier said the reductions would trim overall network capacity by less than 1% in available seat kilometers (ASK), while delivering savings of more than 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel — a significant operational reprieve amid volatile energy markets.
The flight eliminations are concentrated on loss-making short-haul routes operating out of Frankfurt and Munich. In a bid to offset the pullback, Lufthansa said it would simultaneously scale up select services from Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels as part of a wider efficiency overhaul spanning its six European hubs.
The airline confirmed that an initial wave of near-term adjustments — covering all operations through May 31 — has already taken effect, with 120 daily flight cancellations introduced as of Tuesday. Passengers affected by the changes have been notified directly.
At least three destinations have been temporarily suspended from the current schedule: Bydgoszcz and Rzeszow in Poland, and Stavanger in Norway. An additional 10 routes — including connections to Heringsdorf, Cork, Gdansk, Ljubljana, Rijeka, Sibiu, Stuttgart, Trondheim, Tivat, and Wroclaw — will be consolidated through alternative Lufthansa Group hubs.
The group framed the restructuring as a targeted move to sharpen efficiency across its European network without undermining access to its global long-haul connections, which remain a core revenue pillar.
Lufthansa added that updated medium-term route plans for the summer season will be released in late April or early May, with further short-haul revisions expected to follow.
On fuel security, the group offered reassurance, stating its jet fuel supply is fully secured for the weeks ahead, supported by a dual strategy combining direct physical procurement with financial price-hedging instruments to absorb the impact of elevated costs.
