Hungary’s Incoming PM Signals Potential ICC Enforcement Against Netanyahu

(MENAFN) Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, has stated that he would enforce an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to enter Hungarian territory, signaling a shift from the previous government’s approach.

At a press briefing, Magyar said his government would halt the planned withdrawal from the ICC initiated under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. He emphasized that, as a member state, Hungary is legally required to comply with ICC arrest warrants.

The ICC issued warrants in 2024 for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over allegations related to war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Magyar’s remarks follow reports that he had spoken directly with Netanyahu after his party’s recent electoral victory. While confirming the communication, he downplayed claims that he extended a specific invitation, explaining that he had been in contact with several international leaders regarding an upcoming commemorative event marking the anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 uprising.

He also stated that he informed Netanyahu of Hungary’s intention to remain within the ICC framework, noting that continued membership would carry legal obligations regarding enforcement of court decisions.

Magyar stressed that any individual subject to an ICC warrant entering Hungarian territory would be subject to arrest under international legal commitments.

His position marks a clear departure from the previous government, which rejected ICC jurisdiction and had pledged protection for Netanyahu’s travel to Hungary. The prior administration also initiated withdrawal from the court, arguing it had become politically influenced, although the process has not yet fully taken effect under international procedures.
