Palestinian Pastor Calls for Attention to Civilian Deaths in Gaza, Lebanon
Isaac, who leads the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Ramallah, commented that public anger should not be centered solely on the damaged religious statue. In a post on social media, he stated: “The outrage shouldn’t be about a destroyed statue of Jesus—abhorrent as that is.”
He further emphasized that the larger issue is the impact of ongoing conflict on civilians and infrastructure, adding: “The real outrage is the targeting of civilians, the assault on human dignity, the devastation in Gaza and Lebanon. War is evil. We need Accountability,” according to his statement.
The comments followed the circulation of footage showing a soldier striking and breaking a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon, an incident that triggered strong reactions from local and international religious and political voices.
Church leaders in Jerusalem condemned the act, describing it as a serious violation of Christian values and calling for accountability for those responsible, according to statements from religious authorities.
Military authorities reportedly said the soldier involved would not face a criminal investigation but would instead be subject to disciplinary action. The armed forces also stated that the behavior shown in the footage does not align with their expected standards and values.
