Qatar Voices Support for U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Extension

(MENAFN) Qatar signaled Tuesday it is prepared to support prolonging the current ceasefire between the United States and Iran if Pakistan-led negotiations fail to secure a lasting agreement, underscoring mounting global concerns over the escalating crisis.

Speaking at a press briefing in Doha, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari stressed Doha’s position, stating, "We support extending the ceasefire until a peaceful solution is achieved,” as uncertainty clouds ongoing diplomatic efforts.

He warned of the broader consequences of renewed conflict, saying, "Return to hostilities is in no one’s interest and would choke the global economy," highlighting the high stakes tied to stability in the region.

Al-Ansari reaffirmed Qatar’s backing of Pakistan’s mediation role, noting that Doha remains engaged with multiple stakeholders while closely tracking developments. He also rejected suggestions that Gulf nations have been sidelined in the evolving situation.

The spokesperson emphasized the strategic importance of maritime security, describing the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz as having global ramifications. He added, “We are working with all partners to restore the strait to its previous state.”

Addressing Iran directly, al-Ansari urged renewed diplomatic engagement, calling on Tehran "to engage in communication for a peaceful resolution," and pushing for a return to negotiations.

Tensions intensified after Iran imposed navigation restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz on March 2—just days after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets on Feb. 28. The waterway is a critical artery for global oil and gas shipments.

Pakistan hosted talks between Washington and Tehran on April 11–12 following its role in securing a 14-day ceasefire on April 8. That truce is due to expire Wednesday evening, Washington time.

While efforts are underway to organize another round of negotiations, the outlook remains uncertain. US President Donald Trump has cast doubt on extending the ceasefire, saying it is “highly unlikely” and warning that the Strait of Hormuz will stay blocked until an agreement is reached.
