US Organizes Evacuations for Citizens Amid Rising Mideast Tensions
In an official statement, the department said it is arranging charter flights and working to expand available travel options depending on security conditions. It also noted that where commercial flights are still operating, officials are helping citizens secure tickets.
For individuals in locations with limited or no commercial air travel, the US is coordinating alternative routes, including facilitating movement to neighboring countries. The department also highlighted efforts to increase ground transportation options, particularly for those seeking to depart from areas such as Israel.
“The Department is answering calls from American citizens in the Middle East and continues to provide travel options for those wishing to leave. The Department will also waive any statutory requirement for American citizens to reimburse the government for travel expenses,” the statement added.
The evacuation efforts come amid heightened instability following military actions involving the US and Israel against Iran earlier this year, which triggered retaliatory strikes across multiple locations in the region.
Diplomatic efforts to contain the situation have included talks hosted in Pakistan, where a temporary ceasefire was brokered earlier this month. With the truce nearing its expiration, additional negotiations are expected to take place in an effort to prevent further escalation.
