Trump Claims Iran Seeks Hormuz Opening to “Save Face”
In posts shared on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump argued that Iran benefits financially from keeping the waterway open, claiming it generates significant daily revenue from oil transport.
"Iran doesn’t want the Strait of Hormuz closed, they want it open so they can make $500 Million Dollars a day (which is, therefore, what they are losing if it is closed!). They only say they want it closed because I have it totally blockaded (closed!), so they merely want to 'save face'," he said.
He also claimed that intermediaries had recently communicated Iran’s preference to reopen the strait, while warning that doing so could complicate future negotiations.
"People approached me four days ago, saying, 'Sir, Iran wants to open up the Strait, immediately.' But if we do that, there can never be a Deal with Iran, unless we blow up the rest of their Country, their leaders included!"
Reports indicate that Trump also referenced ongoing diplomatic discussions involving a ceasefire extension, which he said would give Iran time to present a “unified proposal.” These talks followed earlier mediation efforts involving Pakistan, which hosted discussions between US and Iranian representatives earlier in April after brokering a temporary ceasefire agreement.
In additional remarks, Trump claimed Iran’s financial situation was deteriorating.
"Iran is collapsing financially! They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately- Starving for cash!" he wrote.
He further asserted that Iran was losing approximately $500 million per day due to disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, adding that internal military and police units were allegedly experiencing payment issues.
