European Commissioner Warns of Erosion of International Humanitarian Law
Speaking at the EU Ambassadors' Conference 2026, Hadja Lahbib, European Commissioner for Equality and Preparedness and Crisis Management, said violations of humanitarian law have become “the norm rather than the exception,” with devastating effects on civilians and aid workers.
"Today, the rules to protect human life are brushed away like an unwelcome house guest.
Humanitarian access is used as a bargaining chip. Aid workers are targeted, even the humanitarian system itself is under attack as the need skyrockets," she said.
Lahbib emphasized that international humanitarian law remains “the strongest shield we have to protect human life in war,” while also underlining that its significance extends beyond immediate battlefield protection.
“It also protects global stability,” she said, noting that attacks on civilians and restrictions on aid have wider repercussions, including displacement, regional instability, and the risk of state collapse.
