Magnitude 5.8 Quake Jolts China's Xinjiang Region
The US Geological Survey documented the tremor at 5.8 magnitude, striking at approximately 3:44 p.m. local time (0744GMT) with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath Tumxuk county.
No immediate damage reports emerged as initial information continued flowing in from the affected zone.
The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the seismic event at a slightly higher 6.0 magnitude, a Chinese state-run news agency reported.
The tremor also impacted Aheqi county within the Kizilsu Kyrgyz autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang, according to media.
The earthquake's shallow depth—just over six miles below the surface—typically amplifies ground shaking intensity, raising concerns among officials monitoring the situation in this densely populated region of northwestern China.
