UN Chief Commends Iraq for Peaceful Parliamentary Elections
He also commended the nation’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for its efficient management and organization of the voting process.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the generally calm and orderly conduct of the polls and trusts that political stakeholders will maintain the spirit of peace and respect for the electoral process as results are awaited,” Guterres declared in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.
Guterres underlined the significance of a “timely and peaceful government formation process” that mirrors the will of the Iraqi population and aligns with their hopes for security and advancement.
The UN leader reaffirmed the body’s ongoing commitment to assisting Iraq in strengthening its democratic achievements and fostering a “peaceful and prosperous future.”
He also conveyed gratitude for the efforts of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), whose electoral support role is drawing to an end after more than twenty years of service.
As reported by the IHEC, more than 12 million Iraqis—including members of the security forces and displaced citizens—participated in Monday’s parliamentary election, marking a voter turnout exceeding 55%.
The final results are anticipated to be disclosed within a day.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani praised the electoral process, describing it as a “remarkable step forward toward greater stability and progress.”
