MPs of Ukraine refuse to nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
The nomination proposal was submitted last month by MPs citing his role in efforts to mediate the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. However, only 132 deputies supported the resolution, falling short of the required majority, effectively ending Ukraine’s attempt to endorse him.
Trump has been pursuing a Nobel nomination for months, receiving backing from several governments, including Pakistan, Cambodia, Israel, and Gabon. In March, a US congressman praised his “historic role in ending wars,” while in July, Israel’s prime minister personally delivered a nomination letter at a White House event.
The US president has claimed he deserves the prize, stating he has “ended eight wars in eight months.” He also argued that denying him the award would “insult” the US, citing mediation efforts in the Middle East, Central Africa, and Ukraine.
Trump has stressed that the award is not for him personally but for the country, acknowledging he might not win: “they’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing.” Before returning to office, he promised to resolve the Ukraine conflict in 24 hours—a claim he later described as metaphorical—and has since extended the timeline repeatedly, expressing frustration over stalled peace efforts and failing to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Nobel Committee keeps its nominee list confidential, but bookmakers have included Trump among long-shot contenders. The winner is expected to be announced on Friday.
