Serbia Kicks Off First High-Speed Rail Service Under China’s BRI

(MENAFN) Serbia has officially inaugurated high-speed rail service between Belgrade and Subotica, fully activating its first railway line capable of reaching speeds up to 200 km/h — a flagship infrastructure project under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The new 183.1-kilometer stretch, operated by national carrier Srbijavoz, now connects the capital with northern Serbia in just 79 minutes, a dramatic improvement from the previous five-hour journey.

The launch marks a key phase of the larger Hungary-Serbia railway, a 341.7-km cross-border line aimed at enhancing China-Europe rail connectivity. The Serbian portion, built by China Railway International and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), is widely expected to boost tourism, encourage investment, and improve transport efficiency across the region.

The first Inter City (Soko) train departed Belgrade Center at noon on Wednesday, carrying 253 passengers. To promote the new route, the government is offering free rides through Oct. 12.

The southern segment between Belgrade and Novi Sad has been operational since March 2022, while the final 108-km northern section from Novi Sad to Subotica was completed earlier this month.

The fully operational Serbian segment is being hailed as a landmark achievement in China-Europe infrastructure cooperation, positioning Serbia as a critical transit hub in the region.
