Migrant Boat Overturn Claims Life off Greek island
(MENAFN) A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Lesvos Island in Greece on Sunday, resulting in the death of one woman, Greek authorities confirmed. Seventeen individuals were rescued from the waters amid ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG), in collaboration with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), continues to conduct the operation, the HCG said.
The nationalities of both the deceased woman and the survivors remain unknown at this time.
Since 2015, Greece has served as a primary gateway for irregular migrants and refugees aiming to enter the European Union, with over one million arrivals documented. Tragically, hundreds have lost their lives attempting this perilous sea crossing.
