China Calls for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire, Palestinian State Recognition

(MENAFN) China has issued an urgent call for the international community to advance a “comprehensive ceasefire” in Gaza to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis, while pushing for formal recognition of Palestine.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Friday the need to “promote a comprehensive ceasefire” in Gaza with the “greatest sense of urgency,” according to state-run Xinhua News reported late Saturday.

Speaking in Beijing during a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Wang pressed global powers to come together and confront the escalating Palestinian crisis.

He specifically urged nations wielding influence over Israel, along with the UN Security Council and humanitarian organizations, to step up and fulfill their responsibilities in addressing the conflict.

Wang underscored the principle that "the Palestinians governing Palestine" must be upheld, describing Gaza and the West Bank as “inalienable territories” of Palestine. He stressed that any governance arrangements following the war must honor Palestinian aspirations and protect their rights.

Advocating for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations and reaffirming support for a two-state solution, Wang rejected “unilateral actions” that undermine peace efforts.

Highlighting grave concerns over the ongoing two-year conflict and the severe humanitarian toll in Gaza, he condemned Israel’s continued efforts to seize Gaza City and its “encroachment” in the West Bank. Wang said these actions “seriously violate international law” and threaten the viability of a two-state solution as well as stability in the Middle East.

While affirming Israel’s right to exist, Wang equally recognized Palestine’s right to statehood, rejecting “double standards” and emphasizing that the lives of Israelis and Arabs are “equally precious.” He warned that responding to violence with violence “only fuels hatred.”

China remains committed to backing Palestine’s “just cause” and working towards a ceasefire alongside a fair, enduring resolution grounded in UN resolutions and a two-state framework, Wang concluded.
