Seoul's Solo Households Hit Record High

(MENAFN) The number of people living alone in Seoul has hit a record high, with solo households now representing the largest household type in the city, media reported Monday, citing a newly released analysis by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

The 2024 data shows that around 1.66 million Seoul residents are living alone—an increase from 1.63 million the previous year. Single-person households now make up close to 40% of all homes in the South Korean capital.

In comparison, two-person households account for 26.2%, while families of four represent only 12.3%. The figures underscore a growing societal shift toward smaller households and individual living arrangements.

The report also underscores South Korea's rapid demographic aging. The capital is officially part of a "super-aged" society—defined by more than 20% of the population being aged 65 or older. As of July, those aged 60 and above made up 20.2% of Seoul's population.

Moreover, households that include at least one senior citizen aged 65 or older now constitute over 30% of all homes in the city.

Interestingly, even as more residents opt for solo living, the number of marriages in Seoul has been climbing for the second consecutive year.

Marriage numbers, which plummeted during the COVID-19 pandemic—from 44,746 in 2020 down to 35,752 in 2022—bounced back to 36,324 in 2023.

That trend continued last year, with 42,471 marriages recorded—marking a 16.9% year-over-year increase.
