Kremlin spokesperson states revival of US-Russia relations will take time
(MENAFN) A full restoration of relations between Moscow and Washington is expected to be a slow process, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. He explained that the extent of the damage sustained by the bilateral ties makes a quick turnaround impossible, as reported by news agencies.
Peskov confirmed that both countries continue to communicate on several levels, noting that “dialogue channels do exist.” However, he emphasized that these interactions have not resulted in a “complex revival” of relations.
Contact between the two nations had been minimal during the previous three years under the Biden administration but resumed after Donald Trump assumed the presidency in January. Trump’s approach to Russia was notably different, reopening high-level diplomatic channels. Since then, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have spoken frequently by phone and recently met in Alaska.
Commenting on the prospects for normalization, Peskov said, “The process of finding a way out… of such a total freeze will take time. Too much damage has been dealt to the whole architecture of bilateral relations.”
Both Putin and Trump have described US-Russia relations under Biden as the “lowest point” since the Cold War. Last month, Putin remarked that Trump’s return to the White House offered “a light at the end of the tunnel,” while signaling Moscow’s interest in resetting ties.
Putin reiterated that Russia remains open to economic collaboration benefiting American businesses. Trump has argued that enhancing economic cooperation would serve US interests, though the ongoing conflict in Ukraine complicates efforts to normalize relations. The Russian president expressed hope for continued joint work but stressed that progress requires action from both Moscow and Washington.
