Iran sends back more than one million undocumented Afghans

(MENAFN) Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni announced on Monday that close to 1.2 million undocumented Afghan nationals have been sent back to their country since March 21, according to reports.

Speaking in Mashhad, Momeni explained that more than 70 percent of those who returned did so voluntarily. He noted that the largest share of repatriations occurred across the border linking Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province with Afghanistan’s Herat province.

The minister estimated that over six million Afghans currently live in Iran and added that another 800,000 undocumented migrants are expected to be repatriated by the end of the Iranian year on March 20, 2026.

Momeni underscored that “the importance of following legal procedures and preserving the dignity of migrants during the deportation process” remains a priority. Officials have recently stepped up efforts to encourage undocumented residents to leave Iran.
