Geoffrey Hinton Urges Guarding Humanity from AI Risks

(MENAFN) Artificial intelligence pioneer and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Geoffrey Hinton has called on governments across the globe to work together in training AI systems to ensure they do not harm humanity.

He warned that the rapid advancements in AI technology could soon lead to it surpassing human intelligence.

Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai on Saturday, Hinton emphasized that while nations may have differing national interests, no country desires AI to overpower humanity.

Hinton pointed out that international collaboration is unlikely in areas involving offensive uses of AI, such as “cyberattacks, lethal autonomous weapons, or fake videos for manipulating public opinion.”

However, he proposed the establishment of a “network of institutions” that could steer the development of AI systems, ensuring they are designed with a focus on not threatening human existence.

He drew a parallel to the Cold War era, comparing this kind of cooperation to the Soviet-US efforts to curb nuclear proliferation.

Regarded as the “Godfather of AI,” Hinton made an analogy between AI development and “raising a tiger cub,” suggesting that just like a tiger, AI could become dangerous as it matures.

“There’s only two options if you have a tiger cub as a pet. Figure out if you can train it so it never wants to kill you, or get rid of it,” he said.

He further elaborated that as AI systems continue to advance, they will likely seek greater control to accomplish their objectives.

Simply “turning it off” when AI outpaces human capabilities will not be a viable solution.
