UN Warns Strikes Near Nuclear Facilities Pose Threat
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed that the IAEA team stationed at ZNPP was alerted to the attacks. On Saturday, the team visited two locations in Enerhodar to assess damage allegedly caused by shelling and drone strikes on Friday. Among the observed damage were shattered windows and debris at one building.
However, the IAEA has yet to verify the precise timing or source of the destruction, the agency noted.
This year, the ZNPP’s training center—situated offsite—has also been hit multiple times, based on data shared by the plant. Last week, the IAEA team was shown additional evidence of shelling damage at other locations in Enerhodar, roughly 5 kilometers from the nuclear facility.
Grossi emphasized that such assaults threaten nuclear safety by increasing the burden and psychological strain on plant personnel amid ongoing conflict.
"Regardless of the intended targets, shelling or drone attacks near nuclear power plants must not occur as any such military activity can have adverse physical or psychological consequences for plant staff and therefore also potentially for nuclear safety and security," Grossi said.
